Wiki | R | Raid

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. It is a collection of hard drives connected and is uniquely arranged to improve the performance of the disk storage of and also provide enhanced security. RAID is commonly used on servers and advanced, high-performance computers.

There are many things that you can do with RAID such as splitting information and then writing it across many disk drives and duplicating of data from one disk drive to another. It can be used for deferred writing of data which is cached in memory and written to the hard disk drive when it becomes available. On the other hand, RAID can also be used for data synchronization.

It is possible to set up RAID with more than one partition instead of multiple drives for achieving enhanced protection if any sectors of the drive become bad. However, in such instances, if the drive fails the data will be lost forever. It is recommended that you use at least two drives so that any single point of failure can be prevented and chances of total data loss are eliminated.

There are different levels of RAID starting from RAID 0 which is all about performance to RAID 6. Beyond that, you also have RAID 1+0 and 0+1.
