Wiki | M | Mongodb

In the mid-2000s, Dwight Merriman and Eliot Horowitz created an open source database called MongoDB that used a document-oriented data model. It was around this very time period that many types of databases arose, and this software to is one among those.

While creating web applications for a company called DoubleClick, Merriman and Horowitz had encountered the problem of development and scalability when following traditional relational databases approach. To counter these issues, they developed this software. And named it Mongo after the word humongous since they wanted to show the idea that it would be able to support huge amounts of data.

It soon became popular and, in 2007, Horowitz and Merriman formed a company called 10Gen Inc. whose purpose was to commercialize this software. They renamed the company MongoDB Inc. in 2013.

In 2009, this database was released to open source. It is available under the terms of GNU General Public License from the Free Software Foundation.

In relational databases, rows and tables are used, but this is not followed in MongoDB which has the architecture of documents and collections. It has document-oriented storage, which means that it stores data as a document with a database. For each server, several databases can exist.

MongoDB runs on both types of servers – Linux and Windows. Since it has been around for so many years, it is now considered as a safe and stable database. However, it does have durability issues. Also, it has a complicated replication setup which is a deterrent to some users.

Some of the leading features of MongoDB are Indexing, Replication, Aggregation, Load Balancing, and others.
