Kbps - Kilobits Per Second

Kilobits per Second, in short, is written as Kbps and is generally used for denoting transfer speed of data. No matter whether it is the FTP programs or browsers, data transfer rates are designated by Kbps units. However, it must be said here that kilobytes and kilobits are not the same. In every kilobyte, there are 8 kilobits available.

Suppose, there is a download going on the server at the speed of 176 Kbps. When dividing 1400 Kbps by 8, 176 Kbps can be reached. Kilobits per second are denoted as Kbps and megabits per second is written as Mbps. 1 Mbps is equal to 1024 kilobits and 1 Mbps is considered 1000 times faster than 1.0 Kbps. It must be said that the “b” in Kbps is bit and not byte. 1 byte is 8 bits. At a time when Facebook is on a quest of finding the use of the laser for high-speed wireless internet, understanding the concept of data transfer becomes very important. It can be defined as the speed at which data is transmitted between devices.

The data rate is measured in million bits (called megabits) or million bytes (called megabytes) per second. Megabits is written as Mbps and megabytes are written as Mbps. There is another related term and it is called data transfer rates. It is meant for networks as well as disk drives. The concerned measurement is done in terms of throughput or kbps, Mbps and Gbps. Recent technology news says that the Connectivity Lab of Facebook has designed a laser detector that has the potential of increasing wireless communications speed to 2Gbps. It is said that orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing can not only increase data transmission rate to 2Gbps but also help in the expansion of wireless communications infrastructure, especially in rural areas.
