Hadoop Distributed File System


Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is the primary storage system used by Hadoop applications. While it does have many similarities with many other distributed file systems, it is different in several respects. Its write-one-read-many model relaxes concurrency control requirements, facilitates high-throughput access, and eases data coherency.

It provides high-performance access to data spread across Hadoop clusters. It acts as a key tool to manage reserves of big data and supports big data analytics applications. This is because it is built to support applications that have large data sets – which may include individual data files that reach up into terabytes.

HDFS follows the master-slave architecture. Ii comprises interconnected clusters where all the files and directories reside. Each cluster contains a single NameNode that manages file system operations and supports DataNodes that manage data storage on individual compute nodes.

It strictly restricts data writing to a single writer at a given time.

HDFS can be accessed in many different ways. The user can use it both via the native Java Application Programming Interface (API) that it provides and through a native C-language wrapper for the Java API. They can also use a web browser to go through HDFS files.
