Generic TLDs (gTLDs)

A generic TLD expandable to generic top-level domain name is a term used to identify the internet address with a particular domain class(.net, com,.org etc.). These are known as global extensions.  There are others like .edu or .gov meant for educational institutions and government bodies respectively.

The distribution of gTLDs is supervised by a business non-profit group under the name of Internet Corporation for Assigned names and Numbers (ICANN) and it has allowed a few more gTLDs that include .biz (for businesses), .info (for anyone), .pro (for professionals like lawyers, doctors), .aero (for services related to air transport) and few more. Having the right domain name is crucial for a website. It is the first thing people look at when they browse a website. It identifies a business and gives the visitor a picture of the nature of the business. There is also country specific domain names that are termed as ccTLD (country code TLD) that distinguish the address like.au for Australia or .in for India. Second level domains (ccTLD) are a combination of the country specific domain names and the global extensions (example- org.au for non-profit organizations in Australia,.com.es for commercial businesses in Spain). These are most suited for businesses that look for global exposure to their business.
