Country code TLDs (ccTLDs)

Country Code TLDs are Internet-related Top-Level Domains that are identified by country codes and are assigned to various countries, dependent territories, or sovereign states. Country Code TLDs consist of two letters.

Top Level Domains are preceded by a dot. In this way, Country Code TLDs for India, US, UK, and Canada are .in, .us, .uk, and .ca respectively.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) recognizes the following categories of Top Level Domains:

ccTLD: Country Code Top Level Domain is two letters long identifiers of a specific country

gTLD: Generic Top Level Domains are the most commonly used TLDs and are familiar to everyone due to their widespread use such as .com (commercial TLDs), .edu (education-related TLDs)

sTLDs: Private organizations are handling Sponsored Top Level Domains

iTLDs: Known as Infrastructure Top Level Domain and comprises of just one TLD that is managed by IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority). It is known as ARPA (Address and Routing Parameter Area).

Although every country has individually assigned ccTLD, it is observed that the majority of organizations prefer Generic Top Level TLDs such as .com, .org, or .net. On e of the reasons for this is to impart global characteristic to the domain name of the organization.
