How To Transfer A Domain From GoDaddy

Before explaining how to transfer a domain from GoDaddy to another domain service, you must know a few facts.

When you transfer a domain, the nameservers associated with the domain will remain the same. However, as the domain is not active with the old registrar anymore, the nameservers on this register will not respond to queries for your domain, leading to downtime. This will last till you shift your domain to your newly chosen DNS. Also, note that there will be no downtime issues if you are using a third-party DNS. That's because the DNS server settings will not change when the transfer process is initiated.

Unlocking The Domain

The transfer process will have to begin by unlocking your domain with GoDaddy. For this, you have to log in to your account with GoDaddy. Go to the Domains section and click Manage to initiate the process. Choose the domains you want to unlock by clicking the select box. Then select lock and confirm.

Please note that transfers are prevented out from GoDaddy through the 60-day lock-in period. This is activated when you make changes or update the first and/or last name or Company Name fields. This feature will not be triggered when you update any other contact information.

GoDaddy provides a specialized process for removing the lock, for those domains on which comes under the lock-in provision. You will have to contact the "Review 60" department of GoDaddy and ask them to review the case and remove the lock.

Getting The Authorization Code

The next step is to get the Auth Code/EPP Code from GoDaddy. From your GoDaddy account click on Manage and select the domain for which you need the code. You can click on the box that will allow you to receive the code in your registered email address.

Next, check if the Whois Privacy Protection is enabled for your domain. If yes, it will have to be disabled.

You can also cancel your domain with GoDaddy by using proxy service. After clicking Manage under the privacy column of your account, select the remove privacy link and select Yes on prompt for removal of privacy. After the domain name is unlocked and you have received the code in your email, the process of transfer to the new domain service can be started.

The Final Steps

Please note that after you have confirmed the Domain Transfer Request email from your new domain service provide, GoDaddy will still send you an email reminding you that you have a chance to cancel the transfer even after the process has been initiated and is underway.

Log in to your GoDaddy account, go to the domains section and from there to the Domain Management tab. In the 'Domain Manager' menu, click on the button that indicates Pending Transfers. There is a box next to your domain name. Check the box and click on the green "Accept/Decline" button.

This will give GoDaddy the confirmation that you have made your mind to get the domain transferred from GoDaddy. After this you will get the approval for transfer immediately.
