Virtual servers are generally known as Virtual Private Servers (or VPS). Sometimes VPS are also called VMs or Virtual Machines.

Virtual servers involve a computer environment having virtual machines with own software or OS. Though the physical machine server has its own OS, each VPS in the machine server also have their own operating systems. This essentially means that the Hypervisor can either come with an entirely separate OS (known as Type 1 Hypervisor) or with a separate software (known as Type 1 Hypervisor). Hundreds of virtual machines can be hosted in a physical machine server in case the Hypervisor is installed on the server. This is the basic difference of virtual servers from that of normal machine servers.

Specialty of virtual servers lie in the independent working of these VMs. They come with their own operating system and can be powered on or off independently without requiring other VMs or the original physical machine server to power on or off.

Every virtual machine is tricked by the virtualisation software in thinking that they have their own virtual hardware. Each virtualised server comes with its own network interface, virtualised hard disk, CPU, and OS.

That’s how Virtual Servers are different from normal machine servers.
