In a dedicated server, the client leases an entire server for their business. It eliminates sharing of resources with other businesses. The client is assured of more reliability and better performance. It gives a business more privacy and security with remote possibilities of intrusions. The client has complete control to configure the server and install their own software applications. They can ask the provider to increase resources in case the traffic increases.

The major disadvantages of dedicated servers are its high operational costs and the client must be technically competent and have skilled professionals to manage and maintain the server.

In colocation, the customer owns the server but places it in a third-party data center and takes advantage of faster upload speed with greater bandwidth, they have the control to increase server capacity without waiting for any approvals, power to install any applications, continuous power with backups in case of outages, all the additional data center facilities.

Drawbacks of colocation include investment on hardware and software, technical expertise, finding providers in a close geographic distance from business location and fluctuating monthly bills.
