In server colocation, you own server equipment; however, in data center you rent server equipment from a hosting provider. Both systems need to stay in contact with service provider. Also, both of them need consultation in order to know what server facilities are provided.

• Manageability – Managing the server equipment is a main task. In server colocation, you need to manage systems on your own; however in data center, maintenance is done by IT staff. In case, you are a tech-savvy, then you can opt for colocation data center or else dedicated server is an option for you.

• Responsibility – Ultimately, when you buy server equipment, then it becomes your responsibility to take care of the equipment. Renting the server equipment outsources maintenance responsibility to IT professionals.

• Security – It is one of the major issues when choosing a web hosting service for your business. A few network administrators have view that looking after server in colocation is much secured; though, some people don’t bother this and leave this responsibility on data center.

• Affordability – Cost varies in server colocation and data center. In server colocation, you need to pay for server equipment and other things, while in data center you just need to pay for server maintenance and facilities like humidity control, temperature control and fire suppression. Therefore, to make a decision in between server colocation and data center, you need to consider your requirements and budget, and then act accordingly.

• Redundancy – For redundancy management of server, you must have well-experienced IT professionals who could replace a component at the time of requirement. In data center, this depends on IT professionals; though in colocation, you should make check-ups on a regular basis with in-house team and make a decision what to replace or not.
