Colocation and dedicated servers vary in several ways and an organization may utilize the one most appropriate to their requirements and challenges. Colocation works out to be more cost-effective. In both the options, you must be technically competent to manage the servers.

As a dedicated server client, you will be renting an entire physical server from your host. You have complete control over the server and can use it for any purpose. Along with the server, you will be renting the data center infrastructure and physical security from your host. Dedicated servers are ideal for businesses with mission-critical applications and if you have constant high-traffic.

In server colocation, you own the server but instead of housing it in your own premises, you choose to locate it at a third-party data center and avail power and other data center infrastructure. You still have control over the server and can increase the server capacity without waiting for the host as and when you want. You have good savings on power and bandwidth costs. However, all the hardware and software required for the servers should be procured by you.
